Eclipsys Sunrise activated at Calgary
Health Region
CALGARY – Eclipsys Corp., of Boca Raton, Fla., announced that Calgary
Health Region’s Rockyview General Hospital has activated its Sunrise
Clinical Manager 3.5 XA advanced clinical software solution.
The activation process was completed in March 2005, over a six-week
period. Today more than 1,900 individual users are utilizing Sunrise
Clinical Manager at the Rockyview General Hospital for patient lists and
results viewing.
The advanced clinical solution provides clinicians with immediate access
to patient medical records, lab results and integrated knowledge at the
point of service. In early 2006, enterprise-wide activation of
computerized physician order entry is expected to be completed at all
three of Calgary Health Region’s urban, adult acute care centres – the
Rockyview General Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre and Peter Lougheed
Centre.
“The smooth implementation of Sunrise Clinical Manager is an important
milestone in achieving 100 percent computerized physician order entry,”
said Belinda Boleantu, project director responsible for clinical
information systems, Calgary Health Region. “Our clinicians are excited
about the ability to immediately view live lab results and perform
trending with that data. In addition, our nurses are using the comment
field for nurse-to-nurse communication more effectively.”
Led by Eclipsys and Calgary project managers, a team of Eclipsys
professional services consultants and the hospital’s Information
Technology staff and clinicians participated in a collaborative effort
to ensure the system would meet the needs of physicians, nurses and
other clinicians across the continuum of care.
To maximize acceptance of the system, clinicians were trained in a
formal classroom setting. Physicians also received individual training
as necessary and Calgary IT staffed a 24/7 support center to provide
post-implementation support to all users.
“Clinician
involvement in design and delivery has been a key factor in the
successful activation at Rockyview General Hospital,” said Dr. Tom
Rosenal, medical leader, Clinical Informatics, Calgary Health Region
(pictured at left). “Physicians appreciate the ability to view
transcribed reports immediately after transcription. In addition,
patient care delivery is benefiting because physicians have a more
complete picture of the patient’s record, such as allergies. We are
looking forward to soon activating more of the functionality available
in Sunrise Clinical Manager.”
“This is the first step in our goal to give clients and providers the
advanced information technology they need to have an electronic health
record as a fundamental tool in managing every aspect of healthcare,”
said Bill Trafford, vice president of Advanced Technology for the
Calgary Health Region.
“Eclipsys continues to increase its customer base in the Canadian
healthcare market as more of the country’s health regions move towards
an integrated electronic health record,” said Eugene V. Fife, Eclipsys'
chairman, president and CEO. “We welcome the Calgary Health Region to
our prestigious and growing list of Canadian customers.”
