Additional Vancouver-area hospitals to use Medworxx

VANCOUVER – Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) will implement the Medworxx Utilization Management System (UMS) to provide evidence-based clinical admission and discharge criteria across two hospitals, Lions Gate Hospital and Richmond Hospital.

This 442-bed deal is an extension of a 2009 licensing agreement between Medworxx and Health Shared Service British Columbia (HSSBC), representing all British Columbia Health Authorities. Vancouver Coastal Health encompasses a total of 2,055 patient beds.

For its part, Medworxx is a Toronto-based developer of clinical patient flow, compliance and education solutions.

The Medworxx UMS offers daily assessments of every patient, and provides a series of criteria sets for different patient populations to determine their appropriateness of admission and each continued day of care.

Medworxx improves patient flow in hospitals, the company said, by quickly identifying barriers, delays, and interruptions to the plan of care for immediate resolution. It also offers a common framework for improved inter-disciplinary communication. The Medworxx UMS is currently in use at over 125 hospitals across Canada.

“Medworxx has successfully rolled out our Utilization Management System across much of the country, and currently serves 25 percent of the hospital beds in Canada,” said Dan Matlow, President and CEO, Medworxx. “We are extremely pleased to extend this program further across British Columbia and look forward to working with both Vancouver Coastal Health and the HSSBC to continue to grow throughout the Province.”

The Medworxx UMS will complement the Health Authority’s iCare/rCare programs, a model of practice that focuses upon recovering capacity that is inefficiently or ineffectively utilized.

Its broad mandate includes efficiency improvement at every point in the continuum of care. “The Medworxx UMS will be an essential supplement to our iCare/rCare programs, improving patient flow and enhancing interdisciplinary communication,” said Karin Olson, Director, Acute Services, Coastal, Vancouver Coastal Health.

Carolle Sauro, Director Critical Care/Medical/Surgical Services, Richmond, Vancouver Coastal Health added, “We look forward to working with Medworxx to achieve measurable results in all of our acute care facilities.”
