UHN uses Montage to link DI, pathology

TORONTO – The University Health Network is now using Montage Healthcare Solutions’ enterprise search and performance analytics technology. In addition to the UHN, Montage announced that Keck Medical Center of USC and Children’s National Medical Center have also implemented the system.

Montage enables radiologists, researchers, educators and other clinicians to search their own radiology information system (RIS) and electronic medical records (EMRs) for specific diagnosis. Users easily find exemplary cases for education, quality improvement or research.

“Montage’s natural language processing (NLP) engine searches all medical imaging reports within our systems; and its Google-like user interface is so easy to use that the radiologists find the cases they need by themselves – without any IT support,” said Kevin Wang, IT Manager, Imaging and Laboratory Services, Keck Medical Center of USC in Los Angeles, California. Approximately 60 clinicians use Montage at USC.

“When you have so many images, it’s difficult to find a pattern or remember a specific case,” Wang adds. Montage finds any positive finding, can search on more complicated terms, and uses a lexicon for string or multiple term look-ups.

“Software solutions like Montage help us identify cases of critical events documented within the radiology report, such as pneumothorax on a chest x-ray, and then review the physician documentation to see how effectively the event was communicated and treated,” said Nabile Safdar, M.D. Pediatric Radiologist at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Similarly, Leon Goonaratne (pictured), Director of Informatics, The Joint Department of Medical Imaging at University Health Network in Toronto, Ontario, will use Montage to link radiology and pathology findings.

“The ability to easily correlate our radiology reports with pathology results will provide our staff with a tool that can help to improve quality and safety, as well as training and research for the department,” he said. The system will also be used to support data analysis and research needs through Montage’s unique ability to perform keyword searches; and identify positive or negative report findings.

“One of the great features of the Montage software is its ease of use. We won’t require a high level of training for our users since the system is quite intuitive and has an interface that everyone is already very familiar with,” Goonaratne said.

“Hospitals already have the data they need, Montage simply makes it transparent and aids radiologists in finding exactly what they’re looking for,” commented Montage president Dr. William Boonn. Busy radiologists can identify populations for a research project or individual cases that were treated in the past.
