St. Michael’s to integrate paper records with EHR

TORONTO – St. Michael’s Hospital has announced an agreement that will see CGI Group implement an information management system to consolidate existing, paper-based health records with its digital records technology. St. Michael’s is current transitioning to the Siemens Soarian electronic health records system.

CGI will implement the Sovera Health Information Management and Content Connector frameworks to integrate the hospital’s paper-based and electronic information systems into a single source solution.

“In 2003, the hospital began a multi-year project to develop a comprehensive electronic patient record. With two of three phases completed, we needed a solution to seamlessly connect our historical paper-based records with our future requirements for a fully integrated health information system,” said Anne Trafford, CIO of St. Michael’s Hospital.

CGI has eliminated the need for historical paper records by implementing Siemens’ Sovera Adaptor. This will integrate with Siemens Canada’s application to create a seamless experience for St. Michael’s health records staff, clinicians and physicians as they retrieve content from both the Siemens Soarian information solution and the CGI Sovera content management repository.

“CGI will use the open architecture document image processing system of FileNet’s document management/enterprise content management platform,” said CGI”s director of consulting services for the project, John George. “This will ensure that the system is scalable to accommodate additional departments across the enterprise – for example, accounts payable and human resources – while maintaining consistent system performance.”

CGI Healthcare provides expertise that accelerates transformation to electronic health records, facilitates secure health information exchange, automates administration for hospital providers, aligns IT environments with business requirements and manages these environments and the applications that sit within them.

The company has served healthcare clients throughout Canada and the United States, including more than 200 hospitals, 30 healthcare systems and more than 140,000 users, as well as managed care organizations, private insurance companies and governments in North America, including almost half of all government health departments in Canada.
