Alberta Cancer Board chooses Sunrise Laboratory

EDMONTON – The Alberta Cancer Board has selected Sunrise Laboratory, from Eclipsys, to replace their existing clinical LIS, help increase productivity, improve workflow and enhance data management. The solution, along with aspects of PowerBANK Enterprise EditionT, Eclipsys’ solution for automating the functions of a hospital’s blood bank, will be implemented at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta.

Sunrise Laboratory will help automate the Cross Cancer Institute’s entire clinical laboratory operation, with features such as enhanced quality control and quality assurance processes, and an integrated dashboard for laboratory operations monitoring. The solution also includes a specimen-tracking system that focuses on the receipt of the specimen and location of the specimen for easy retrieval, which will help the institute improve efficiency and reduce turnaround time.

“Eclipsys Sunrise Laboratory provides great features, along with an easy-to-use interface, which enables us to deploy a system that can manage our laboratory operations and achieve high-rates of solution adoption,” said Peter Braun, Manager, Laboratory Information Systems, Cross Cancer Institute, Alberta Cancer Board. “Additionally, the solution provides superior capabilities for quality assurance and quality control, which is critical to helping us run the safest lab possible.”

And in a different part of the country, Sunrise Laboratory is helping a hospital lab improve its efficiencies. When faced with a 15.3 percent increase in total lab orders, West Parry Sound Health Centre, in Ontario, was able to leverage the automation capabilities of Sunrise Laboratory to achieve the following productivity improvements:

• 16 percent increase in Orders Processed by Hour Worked

• 32 percent increase in Workload Units Processed per Hour Worked

• 44 percent decrease in STAT turnaround times

• 88 percent decrease in overtime hours.

With Sunrise Laboratory, WPSHC was able to improve several key patient safety metrics, such as zero unnecessary duplicate draws and zero wrong patient or incorrect lab values for five of the first six post-implementation months. Additionally, clinician satisfaction with the Eclipsys laboratory information system rose 76.5 percent over the prior solution.

“Our clients’ ability to document outcome improvements through the use of our solutions is the foundation for Eclipsys’ success and it’s great to see the positive results West Parry Sound Health Centre was able to achieve using Sunrise Laboratory,” said Jay Deady, Eclipsys executive vice president, Client Solutions. “We look forward to working with the team at Alberta Cancer Board and helping them achieve similar outcome improvements in efficiency, safety and satisfaction. These types of documented outcome improvements strengthen Eclipsys’ competitive position in the growing lab system replacement market.”
