Toronto teens win MEDy award from Singularity University

October 19, 2016

medy-award-winnersTORONTO – EmojiHealth, a healthcare messaging platform focused on teens, has been announced as one of the MEDy Award winners at Singularity University’s Exponential Medicine conference in San Diego, Calif. The only Canadian startup among the four finalists, EmojiHealth was selected out of over 50 companies featured at the event.

Founded by two Canadian high school students, Alexandra Philp Reeves (Branksome Hall) and Anna Melnyk (Ridley College), the platform harnesses the power of visual communication to empower teens to better manage their health and wellness.

“As teens, we face an overwhelming amount of health information that’s too complex, often confusing and not visual-focused,” said Philp Reeves.

“As a result, we are not empowered with the information, tools or confidence we need to manage our wellness or health conditions, and we created a solution to address this problem,” added Melnyk.

“There is a tremendous potential to apply messaging platforms and chatbots in healthcare,” said Dr. John Reeves, managing director of Cossette Health.

“EmojiHealth is a great example of how powerful and impactful authentic communication can be, improving healthcare outcomes while educating and supporting patients along the way.”

The annual Exponential Medicine conference is a unique and intensive four-day experience that gathers world-class faculty, innovators and organizations from across the biomedical and technology spectrum to explore and leverage the convergence of fast moving technologies in the reinvention and future of health and medicine.

Initiated in 2013, the Exponential Medicine MEDy Awards stands for “Medical Entrepreneurship and Disruption.” The annual awards recognize companies designing products and creating healthcare solutions that are industry-changing innovations.
