NYGH again named #1 community academic hospital

March 13, 2024

Dr Everton GoodenTORONTO – For the sixth consecutive year, North York General Hospital (NYGH) has been named Canada’s number one community academic hospital and among the top four hospitals in the country by Newsweek Magazine. North York General is also among the top 50 hospitals in the world, out of more than 2,400 hospitals from 30 countries.

Proudly serving one of the fastest growing areas with the highest concentration of seniors in Toronto, NYGH is committed to delivering excellent and compassionate care to every person in our diverse communities at every life stage.

“This is a historic time for NYGH as we embark on the most transformational expansion since welcoming our first patients more than 50 years ago,” said Dr. Everton Gooden (pictured), president and CEO. “Our team is known for its expertise and compassionate approach to care, and in the coming years we will modernize our spaces and grow our services so that we can continue to provide the highest possible standard of care to future generations. We are grateful to the North York General Foundation and our generous donors, the Ontario Government, and our many health care and community partners for their vital collaboration and support for NYGH.”

The award, presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider, follows a complex methodology which includes four data sources:

  • Recommendations from medical experts: A survey of more than 85,000 medical experts from across 30 countries.
  • Results from patient satisfaction surveys: Extensive public data from patients who received care.
  • Hospital Quality Metrics: Medical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including patient safety, quality of treatment, and hygiene.
  • PROMs (Patient Reported Outcome Measures): Newsweek and Statista conducted a survey about the implementation and use of questionnaires completed by patients to assess overall experience.

North York General Hospital is a top-tier community academic hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto that provides high-quality acute, ambulatory, primary and long-term care across seven sites to a population of 500,000.

NYGH has one the highest volume Emergency Departments in the GTA and one of the busiest birthing centres in Ontario. NYGH is a core partner in the North York Toronto Health Partners (Ontario Health Team), a partnership between more than 50 organizations working to create a more connected health system in North York.

NYGH is supported by the North York General Foundation whose mission is to raise and steward funds that enable the hospital to deliver exceptional health care to our diverse communities.

“We’re honoured and delighted to be recognized once again as Canada’s top ranking community academic hospital,” says Bert Clark, chair of the NYGH Board of Governors. “This tremendous achievement is a testament to the collective dedication of our talented and hard working staff, physicians, board of governors, volunteers, learners, and researchers who are deeply committed to ensuring a strong NYGH to serve our many communities.”
