New CEO now on the job at Hospital for Sick Children
February 18, 2014
TORONTO – The Hospital for Sick Children last month officially welcomed its new President and CEO, Dr. Michael Apkon (pictured). Having spent the past few months getting to know SickKids a little better, Dr. Apkon now takes over from Mary Jo Haddad, who led the Hospital for Sick Children for 10 years before retiring.
“Although I have long held Sick Kids in high esteem, over the last few months I’ve been able to even better appreciate how wonderful a place this is,” says Dr. Apkon. “I’ve had a chance to see what an innovative, creative, compassionate and committed team this is and I’ve been inspired by everyone’s sense of purpose, passion and pride.”
Following a comprehensive, international search, the Board of Trustees announced in September the appointment of Dr. Apkon to the position of President and CEO.
He came to Sick Kids from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where he was the Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs and the Chief Medical Officer. He was also a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania and a practising paediatric intensive care specialist.
Prior to joining CHOP, he was the Vice-President and Executive Director at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor in Paediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Management.
