New CEO announced at Sinai Health System

TORONTO – Brent Belzberg, chair of the Sinai Health System Board of Directors and David Denison O.C., vice chair of the Sinai Health System Board of Directors, have announced that, following a comprehensive, international search process, Dr. Gary Newton has been appointed to the role of president and CEO of Sinai Health System, effective October 3, 2016.
Dr. Newton is a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School and has been on faculty at the University of Toronto since 1996. He completed internal medicine at the University of Toronto and training in adult cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. This was followed by specialty training in heart failure, combined with an integrative cardiac physiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
A well respected physician leader, Dr. Newton served as the head of the division of cardiology, University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital from 2009 through 2013. He was appointed physician-in-chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in November 2013 and assumed his current role as chief medical strategy officer and physician-in-chief of Sinai Health System in January 2015.
Dr. Newton’s impact on the formation of Sinai Health System includes transformational initiatives underway that boast significant and long-term benefits to the future of the organization. His leadership responsibilities within university environments, hospitals and the Ontario healthcare system have contributed greatly to defining the health system of the future, and putting it into practice.
