Akira Medical acquired by Right Health
September 20, 2017
TORONTO – Right Health, a Toronto-based healthcare company, has announced the acquisition of Akira Medical, an on-demand mobile healthcare platform that provides Canadians with instant access to healthcare practitioners via text and video chat.
The acquisition of Akira strengthens Right Health’s presence in Canada by providing responsive, secure, and sincere one-on-one care, when and where you need it, and tethered to your medical record.
Akira creates an immediate connection for patients to family doctors and medical practitioners, curbing unnecessary walk-in clinic and emergency room visits. Since its launch last year, Akira has conducted more than 20,000 consults with patients across Ontario.
“There’s no doubt that healthcare in Canada is going through a transformation,” says John Mozas (pictured), Right Health co-founder and co-CEO. “New models are shifting control from the system to the patient, and Akira not only provides patients with access to practitioners but also a digital connection to their medical record.”
With Right Health providing extensive experience in clinical operations and Akira’s deep expertise in digital delivery, the combined company will help drive adoption of virtual care across the country. Akira co-founders Dustin Walper, Taha Bandukwala, and Matt Zukowski have joined Right Health in leadership positions and Right Health will continue to operate the platform under the Akira name.
“The acquisition accelerates Akira’s mission to put great care into the pocket of every Canadian,” says Dustin Walper, Akira founder and CEO. “With Right Health backed by one of the most experienced healthcare teams in Canada, Akira has the opportunity to impact the care gap in our healthcare system for the better.”
Created by Dan Pawliw and John Mozas, Right Health was founded with the vision to improve healthcare access by reimagining the clinic experience, enabled by innovative technology. As Right Health builds out primary care clinics, Akira will serve as their virtual service that will complement these local, community practices once operational.
The two companies will pursue a joint vision to bring world-class, affordable healthcare to Canadians, while dramatically improving both the patient and provider experience through significant investment in both people and technology.
