CMA partners with CognisantMD for e-referrals

September 20, 2017

Lindee DavidOTTAWA – Joule, the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) newest company, is partnering with CognisantMD to bring the Ocean Platform for patient engagement and eReferrals to Canadian physicians.

Ocean is a secure, cloud-based platform that connects patients, healthcare providers and researchers through customizable patient forms, screening tools, surveys and referral forms.

This patient-centric platform has the unique capacity to reduce language barriers between physicians and their patients, providing a much-improved patient-doctor experience while also saving time and lives by automatically translating concise clinical notes into the electronic medical record.

The same platform can be used to share patient information among healthcare providers, allowing referrals to be sent electronically in real-time. Already more than 3,500 physicians across the country are using Ocean, which integrates seamlessly with leading electronic medical records systems in Canada.

In 2016, Dr. Doug Kavanagh was among the inaugural physician-led Joule Innovation grant recipients, receiving $50,000 to support the development of the Ocean Platform and expansion of the Ocean Library, which now includes over 3,500 forms for clinical and administrative use.

“A year ago, we knew the Ocean Platform had the potential to change how patients, healthcare providers and researchers communicate and we’re proud to collaborate with CognisantMD to help provide access to this tool for CMA members,” said Joule CEO Lindee David (pictured).

“The days where patients complete paper forms on clipboards are coming to an end – we want to provide physicians with the latest technology to ensure the best use of their time and ensure that patients get the care they need,” she said.

“We are honoured to have the Ocean Platform endorsed by Joule and supported by the Canadian Medical Association,” explains Dr. Doug Kavanagh, Medical Director and Co-Founder of CognisantMD. “Through this partnership, and our mutual commitment to bringing innovative technology to Canadian physicians, we hope to expand access to the platform across Canada, improving healthcare efficiency and patient care.”
