Dennis Giokas joins MedChart as CIO

November 15, 2017

Dennis Giokas 2017TORONTO – James Bateman, the co-founder and CEO of MedChart (www.medchart.ca), has announced the appointment of Dennis Giokas (pictured) as its CIO. Dennis was most recently Chief Technology Officer for Canada Health Infoway and headed up the organization’s Digital Health Innovation Ecosystem Group.

“Dennis is a seasoned executive with deep experience in the transformational use of information technology in healthcare,” says Bateman. “His knowledge of personal health information exchange, consumer health, and business ecosystems will help us enhance the value proposition of MedChart to grow the business.”

Founded in 2015, Toronto-based MedChart is building Canada’s first consumer-moderated health information exchange via a patient-owned, institution-agnostic central record that can include a patients’ medical information from any Canadian healthcare provider.

“I am thrilled to be joining MedChart,” says Dennis, “after assisting them in my volunteer advisor role at MaRS. They have a unique value proposition that we will be able to leverage for patient engagement and empowerment, as well as contribute to bending the healthcare cost curve.” This position is supported by the MaRS Business Acceleration Program’s Embedded Executive Funding.

Dennis has more than three decades of experience in the information management and technology fields, having held positions at Sapient Corporation, notably as vice-president and managing director of its Canadian subsidiary. He has held senior positions with Digital Equipment Corporation, including those of consulting engineer and group technical director. He has consulted on information technology strategy in other industries including financial services, insurance and energy services.

Dennis is on the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research Board. He also advises clients through his consulting company Theoria Health Innovations Inc. He has served as a board director of COACH, Canada’s health informatics association, and HL7 International Inc. He is the past chair and Canada’s representative to the SNOMED International General Assembly. He holds two patents for software innovations and has one industrial design patent. He has a M.Sc. in Computer Science from Boston University.
