SickKids CEO Mike Apkon leaving for Boston
August 22, 2018
TORONTO – The Board of Trustees of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) announced that Dr. Michael Apkon (pictured), SickKids president and CEO, will be leaving SickKids to assume the role of CEO at Tufts Medical Centre and Floating Hospital for Children in Boston, Massachusetts. The transition will occur this fall.
Dr. Apkon has served as the president and CEO of SickKids since January, 2014. During his tenure at SickKids he has been instrumental in implementing transformational initiatives such as SickKids’ new clinical information system, enterprise resource planning and business intelligence systems; SickKids’ hospital of the future; the creation of Kids Health Alliance, and championing the hospital’s Caring Safely program aimed at eliminating preventable harm.
Furthermore, Dr. Apkon has advanced SickKids’ international footprint through capacity building initiatives in China, South Africa and the Middle East.
Dr. Apkon is also a physician executive and a professor of paediatrics at the University of Toronto. Prior to coming to SickKids, he held roles as the Chief Medical Officer for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and as the Executive Director leading Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.
“Mike has had a significant impact in a relatively short period of time. His ambitious drive and aspirational leadership will certainly be missed,” said the Honourable Sabi Marwah, chair, Board of Trustees at SickKids. “Mike’s guidance has set SickKids on a wonderful trajectory and we are committed to building on what has been accomplished. We continue to be very excited about Project Horizon and building the hospital of the future.”
An international search will commence in the upcoming weeks and an interim leadership plan will be announced shortly.
