CAR announces 2021 Radiology Award winners

April 28, 2021

Andrea LumOTTAWA – The Canadian Association of Radiologists is pleased to present the recipients of the 2021 CAR awards. Within the radiology community there are many extraordinary leaders. However, there are those who go above and beyond. Their contributions advance the profession, improve patient care, and influence its future development.

The CAR has acknowledged the following award winners:

CAR Gold Medal Award, Dr. Andrea Lum (pictured), vice dean clinical faculty affairs, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry
This medal is presented to a long-time member of the CAR who has made outstanding contributions to the Association as well as to the profession of radiology in Canada. It is the CAR’s highest honour.

“Thank you to the CAR Board and membership for the honour of being the 28th recipient of the CAR Gold Medal in 2021. It has been a privilege to serve for more than three decades! I continue to lead as vice-president of the Canadian Radiological Foundation and by working with the CAR Board of Directors to advance professional initiatives, such as being the CRF executive sponsor for the Physician Leadership Workshop for Women in Radiology.”

CAR Distinguished Career Achievement Award, Dr. Julian Dobranowski, chair, Department of Radiology, McMaster University, and Niagara Health Chief of Diagnostic Imaging.
The CAR Distinguished Career Achievement Award honours individuals who, over the course of their career, have made very significant contributions to radiology in Canada.

“I am pleased, honored and thrilled to accept the 2021 CAR Distinguished Career Achievement Award and to join a group of past recipients who I have long admired and respected. Throughout my career I have been focused on improving patient outcomes. This has led me on an incredible journey of discovery that has been both challenging and rewarding. I would like to use this opportunity to appeal to all radiologists to continue supporting the CAR and to support your local physician leadership. In these challenging COVID times we need to work together to help transform our healthcare system to be better prepared for the future.”

CAR Young Investigator Award, Dr. Sharon Clarke, clinician-scientist and abdominal radiologist, QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia and associate professor, Diagnostic Radiology, Dalhousie University
This award is presented to a CAR member in the early stages of their career and recognizes exceptional contributions to medical imaging-related research.

“I am honoured to accept the CAR Young Investigator Award this year. I very much enjoy my role as a clinician-scientist and consider myself fortunate to work with so many dedicated students, staff, and clinical and scientist colleagues. This achievement would not be possible without their support and for this I am greatly indebted. I believe that research can provide immense value to clinical radiology and hope that this award inspires others to appreciate research and pursue rewarding careers as clinician-scientists.”

2021 Fellows of the CAR
The Fellowship of the Canadian Association of Radiology (FCAR) is one of the highest honours that the CAR can bestow upon its members.
