He became an MD in Germany in the mid-1990s at the Eberhard-Karls-Universitat Tübingen, in the State of Baden-Württemberg. After moving to the United States, where he obtained a Master of Medical Science degree at the University of Texas, Medical Branch in Galveston, he returned to Germany to complete his PhD (Habilitation) in Experimental Surgery at the University of Regensburg in Bavaria.
