Dr. Marc Jeschke named new VP of Research at HHS

HAMILTON, Ont. – Hamilton Health Sciences Centre has announced the appointment of Dr. Marc Jeschke (pictured) as vice president of research at HHS, commencing on June 1, 2022.
Dr. Jeschke brings world-renowned expertise to the organization in the field of translational research through which basic scientific and medical research are brought into day-to-day clinical applications that directly benefit patient care. He brings a superb track record as a research leader with a proven ability to attract funding and grants from various national programs and agencies to advance innovative medical care in burns.
Under his direction since 2010, the Ross Tilley Burn Centre (RTBC) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre became a leading surgical and burn care institution in North America. Prior to being the director of the RTBC, Dr. Jeschke held faculty positions at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital for Children. There, in addition to his work as a surgeon, he coordinated research activities with a focus on increasing productivity and obtaining grants.
His academic activities include more than 450 peer-reviewed articles, books, and chapters on burn care. As a clinical investigator, he has secured over $22 million in funding to support research and clinical trials throughout his career.
Dr. Jeschke’s expertise in research is accompanied by a stellar record as a medical educator and as a mentor to residents, fellows, and students. He has also served as president of the Shock Society, a scientific society that focuses on improving the care of trauma, shock, and sepsis patients, and president of the Canadian Burn Association.
He became an MD in Germany in the mid-1990s at the Eberhard-Karls-Universitat Tübingen, in the State of Baden-Württemberg. After moving to the United States, where he obtained a Master of Medical Science degree at the University of Texas, Medical Branch in Galveston, he returned to Germany to complete his PhD (Habilitation) in Experimental Surgery at the University of Regensburg in Bavaria.

The appointment of Dr. Jeschke marks another key point in the modernization of the research enterprise across HHS. He will provide steady leadership and guidance to help HHS keep delivering innovative medical advancement that saves lives, not only in Ontario but across the globe.
