New chief of research and innovation at IWK Health

July 20, 2022

Frank MacMasterHALIFAX – IWK Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Frank MacMaster (pictured) will be joining the hospital as the new vice president, research & innovation. He will also be appointed as a professor of psychiatry in the faculty of medicine at Dalhousie University. We look forward to welcoming MacMaster on September 5, 2022.

MacMaster holds a PhD in neurobiology and anatomy and was a postdoctoral fellow in brain imaging in child psychiatry at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He is currently a professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Calgary and is the scientific director for the Provincial Addictions and Mental Health Portfolio (PAMH) for Alberta Health Services (AHS). AHS provides tertiary and primary care for over four million people in Alberta and beyond.

At PAMH MacMaster led a provincial research and knowledge translation team, supporting over 570 active researchers in addiction in mental health across the province. He is also a successful academic researcher at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary in the departments of psychiatry and pediatrics.

Originally from Nova Scotia, MacMaster studied at Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie universities and did his training at the IWK in mental health, so this is a very much a ‘homecoming’ for him and his family.
