October 4, 2022
TORONTO – North York General Hospital (NYGH) has been ranked as one of the World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2023 by Newsweek Magazine. This international award recognizes NYGH as one of the leading hospitals in 28 countries in the adoption of advanced technologies for patient care. NYGH is also the top ranked Smart community hospital in Canada.
“We are honoured to be recognized for our leadership in using digital technology to improve patient and community health,” says Karyn Popovich (pictured), president and CEO of NYGH. “As an integral part of NYGH’s Strategic Plan, digital innovation enables us to empower patients and families and achieve better health outcomes for everyone.”
North York General’s bold Digital Health Strategy (DHS) is essential to how the organization is meeting changing community and health system needs.
“This important award reflects the NYGH team’s commitment to anticipating and meeting the needs of North York, one of Toronto’s fastest growing and ethnoculturally diverse areas,” says Duska Kennedy, chief digital officer, NYGH. “Over the next few years, NYGH will focus on modernizing our digital services and infrastructure, including our Cerner patient health information system, connecting care for patients across the hospital and community, and enhancing the experience for patients and health professionals.”
“Digital health is enabling the health system to be more preventative, proactive and personalized,” says Dr. Phil Shin, NYGH chief medical information officer. “Solutions like eReferral and SCOPE make it much easier for physicians and other providers to access services for their patients. Patients are being supported with tools like Remote Patient Monitoring and the North York Navigator app to access care from smart devices anywhere, anytime.”
This recognition presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., a world-leading industry ranking provider, builds on other recent awards received by NYGH, including our 2022 Newsweek ranking of Top Community Academic Hospital in Canada (for four consecutive years) and one of Canada’s Best Employers 2022 by Forbes.
The World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2023 ranking lists the top 300 smart hospitals from 28 countries. Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. As part of the evaluation, the ranking process is based on three key areas:
- International online survey by health care professionals with knowledge about smart hospitals.
- International hospital survey through implementation and usage of digital technologies that were assessed and validated by chief digital/information officers or senior management.
- Desk research every nominated hospital as validation for this hospital’s achievements.
NYGH is a leading academic community hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto, that provides high-quality acute, ambulatory, and long-term care to approximately half a million people across seven sites and those beyond referred to us for specialized care.
