ASSESS Project helps tech developers expand

October 26, 2022

Christopher McCabeEDMONTON – Canadian healthcare technology developers have a new resource available to them to inform their product development efforts. The ASSESS Project has launched, which is a global initiative to support innovators with early insights into the business case to develop their technology. The project utilizes the online ASSESS Platform to connect those that are developing healthcare technologies to global experts in health technology assessment.

These experts provide assessment of a technology’s commercial potential and identify the evidence requirements to bring the product to market.

“Health technology assessment (HTA) is often completed to support reimbursement decision-making, thus relatively late in the R&D cycle,” said Dr. Christopher McCabe (pictured), the project’s co-creator and chief scientific officer. “The ASSESS Project has been created to re-think how healthcare technology innovators are supported with HTA to facilitate assessment and feedback much earlier in the R&D cycle. This is intended to support innovators to reduce the uncertainty involved with product development.”

The HTA experts who work on The ASSESS Platform are vetted by the international ASSESS Project Advisory Group, that represent some of the top global leaders in the field.

“The Assessors recruited to the platform currently are capable of completing assessments from the perspective of 42 different markets,” said Dan Palfrey, project co-creator. “This is particularly important for Canadian companies who have interests in export markets, helping them obtain strong insights into their commercial potential and evidence requirements outside of Canada.”

The project will also support connection of healthcare technology developers to the investment community. It will phase in platform investment community access to non-confidential information to help accelerate the availability of capital for companies that have significant potential, as informed by the Assessor community working on the platform.
