Understanding the Healthcare System in Canada and the US

The purpose of this course is to explain the complexity and intricacies of the Canadian and US healthcare systems. We will focus on an overview of the healthcare systems looking at healthcare facilities (type, governance, accreditation – from the family physician, to ambulatory care, to acute hospital care, and long-term care), personnel, funding, and legislation and laws pertaining to health system operations (including federal and provincial/territorial responsibilities, the Canada Health Act and selected provincial legislation). The status of the roll-out of a pan-Canadian ehealth record, patient portals, two way communication, advances in telehealth and connected health, mobile health applications and Innovation in health care, Health Canada and FDA approval process and procurement.
Competencies Achieved Upon Completion of Course
Participants will be able to:
- Describe and discuss the current structure and function of the Canadian and US healthcare systems.
- Understand several of the major issues facing the modern health care system with regard to health technologies and drugs (development, regulation, and use), the rollout of the electronic health record and the use and regulation of mobile technologies.
- Assess the population health indicators and health status for a city/province or region.
- Critically compare and contrast the two health systems in the areas presented in the course.

Dr.Candace Gibson, PhD, CHIM, Assistant Dean, BMSUE, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University; Director, Center for Collaborative Command and Leadership, CMU & Western University; Instructor, NIHI.
Dr. Gibson served as the chair and past-chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), and is recognized as one of the pioneers of Canadian e-learning, health informatics education, and as an editor and author of the first Canadian text book on health information management and recently of the Canadian guidelines for the health information management lifecycle. Dr. Gibson has been the recipient of numerous provincial and national research grants, and also of several awards recognizing her outstanding achievement as a university educator, the recipient of the AFMC-Infoway eHealth Award in 2013, and CHIMA’s Tribute to Excellence Award in 2016. She is the author of over 80 peer-reviewed publications in experimental neuroscience and health informatics.

It is up to the quality and regulatory representatives of an organization to understand and apply the regulations and standards to their products. There are some key ways of approaching this area of quality and regulatory in medical devices with a pragmatic mindset and flexible way of thinking that can save time and effort.
