WATERLOO and HAMILTON, Ont. – The National Institutes of Health Informatics and McMaster University Continuing Education are offering microcourses that are of great importance to healthcare professionals, starting in the fall of 2024. They are: Data Governance in Health Care, the Fundamentals; and Cybersecurity for Privacy Professionals. The courses are available online.
Data governance (DG) involves the management of data availability, integrity, security, and usability within an organization that is based on specified standards and policies. DG is a critical function in healthcare where the responsible and ethical handling of patient information and other sensitive data is paramount.
The course will explore industry best practices for establishing a data governance function in a healthcare organization. Learn about effective data governance standards, risk and mitigation strategies, and the impact of AI and machine learning.

The course will be taught by Trevor Strome (pictured above), MSc, PMP, Director, Digital Airport Solutions, Winnipeg Airports Authority, Former Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, College of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.
Trevor has over two decades of analytics and informatics leadership experience. He is director of information technology at the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. In this role, he is responsible for the Information Technology team and assuring efficient airport operations and business functionality through the provisioning of technology services at Winnipeg Airports Authority.

Public and private sector organizations in Canada and around the world are under increasing pressure to protect themselves, sensitive information, client information and critical infrastructure from cyber attacks. Threats to information system assets come from state actors, organized crime and hacktivists who now routinely attack our electoral, financial, healthcare and public utility systems.
The purpose of this program is to provide practical cybersecurity management strategies and recommendations to help minimize the occurrence or impact of cyber-related losses.
