New micro courses on leadership in healthcare and clinical care

Candace Gibson Dominic CovveyWATERLOO and HAMILTON, Ont. – The National Institutes of Health Informatics and McMaster University Continuing Education are offering new microcourses for healthcare professionals, starting in the fall of 2024. They are: Leadership in Health Care, Learning to Lead; and The Nature of Clinical Care in 6 Easy Steps. The courses are available online.

Leadership in Health Care: Learning to Lead investigates the nature of leadership, considers what makes a good leader, and investigates the skills needed in leadership, including effective communication, handling conflict, building high-performing collaborative teams, decision-making, and setting and achieving a vision and goals.

Competencies Achieved
By successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Delineate the current leading theories of leadership and leadership qualities
  • Develop and deliver a successful communications strategy
  • Provide effective feedback to colleagues/subordinates comfortably
  • Understand their conflict management style, recognize the advantages and disadvantages of their approach, and act on improving their approach
  • Demonstrate the steps in building a high-performing team and participate in one through the various exercises and simulations given in the course.

This course will be taught by Dr. Candace Gibson (pictured left) PhD, CHIM, Professor Emerita, Western University; Professor of Pathology, College of Medicine, Central Michigan University; NIHI Instructor.

Dr. Gibson served as the chair and past-chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), and is recognized as one of the pioneers of Canadian e-learning, health informatics education, and as an editor and author of the first Canadian text book on health information management and recently of the Canadian guidelines for the health information management lifecycle. Dr. Gibson has been the recipient of numerous provincial and national research grants, and of several awards recognizing her outstanding achievement as a university educator.

The Nature of Clinical Care in 6 Easy Steps explains the concepts underlying medical care. It addresses the patient-doctor relationship, how people make diagnoses and information about interventions, including their benefits and their risks. This course is important for anyone interested in studying, evaluating, reporting on, administering, providing solutions for, or involved with or cared for by the healthcare system.

Competencies Achieved
By successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Enhanced communications with clinical professionals
  • Ability to better describe, analyze and document clinical practices and workflow
  • Better listening skills for dealing with clinicians
  • Improved ability to find relevant medical information
  • Improved ability to understand and critically evaluate the results of medical research

This course will be taught by Dominic Covvey (pictured right): FACMI, FHIMSS, FCIPS, SMIEEE, ITCP President & Director, National Institutes of Health Informatics (NIHI).

Dominic is the president and director of NIHI and a retired professor from the University of Waterloo. His research has addressed areas such as healthcare workflow, competencies and curricula in Health Informatics (HI) and the design of electronic health records. He founded NIHI and continues to write and teach in the area of HI. Most recently he co-authored a compendium of 3 volumes on The Nature of Clinical Care.
