Osler begins construction of new acute-care hospital

April 2, 2025

Frank MartinoBRAMPTON, Ont. – William Osler Health System has broken ground on a new Peel Memorial Hospital – a pivotal moment that marks a significant step forward for healthcare in the community. This milestone arrives as Osler celebrates the 100th anniversary of Peel Memorial in 2025. The new facility will increase vital services to meet the needs of one of Canada’s fastest-growing, most diverse communities.

Those joining Osler and Osler Foundation senior leadership, board members, donors and community champions to commemorate the occasion included Doug Ford, premier of Ontario; Sylvia Jones, deputy premier and minister of health; Kinga Surma, minister of infrastructure; members of provincial Parliament from Brampton and Peel Region; and Patrick Brown, mayor of Brampton.

“Osler is thrilled to move ahead with building the new Peel Memorial Hospital, which will provide even greater access to important healthcare services for our growing community,” said Dr. Frank Martino (pictured), president and CEO, William Osler Health System. “Reaching this milestone during Peel Memorial’s 100th anniversary makes it even more special. This project builds on a century of compassionate care and will serve our community for generations.”

The transformation of Peel Memorial into Brampton’s second hospital will bring significant increases to hospital programs and services, expanding access and ensuring the community receives high-quality care close to home.

The new multi-story patient tower and the new purpose-built 24/7 emergency department will enhance emergency care for residents, addressing capacity pressures at Brampton Civic Hospital.

Additional inpatient services at the new Peel Memorial Hospital, combined with existing outpatient services – including diagnostic imaging and surgery – will significantly improve access to comprehensive healthcare services for Brampton and surrounding communities.

Early construction activities at Peel Memorial, such as a temporary access road, will pave the way for the new patient tower. The next stages of construction will expand clinical space within the existing building to accommodate growing patient needs.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate this incredible milestone as we get shovels in the ground for the new Peel Memorial Hospital, which will support improved care and continued growth in Brampton, throughout Peel Region and beyond,” said premier Ford. “The investments we are making across the province will help transform healthcare, with $50 billion supporting more than 50 hospital projects across Ontario.”
