Mackenzie Health revalidates its Stage 7 status

July 2, 2025

Purvi DesaiRICHMOND HILL, Ont. – Mackenzie Health has once again achieved Stage 7 validation – the highest level of certification from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). This achievement recognizes Mackenzie Health’s adoption of digital health solutions that help deliver safe and efficient care for its growing community.

The HIMSS EMRAM certification ranks the use and effectiveness of information systems within hospitals on a scale of 0 to 7.

“As an organization that puts so much emphasis on investing in cutting-edge technology to better enhance our patient care and patient experience, achieving EMRAM Stage 7 validation for the third time reaffirms that our digital health journey is making a real and measurable difference in the lives of our patients and the efficiency of our care delivery,” said Purvi Desai (pictured), vice president, digital health and chief information officer at Mackenzie Health.

In 2018, Mackenzie Health was the first acute care hospital in Canada with an emergency department and intensive care unit to achieve HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 and it has maintained this level ever since.

Through continued investments in digital health, Mackenzie Health significantly improved its ability to securely share information and collaborate across the care continuum. Enhanced interoperability with long-term care partners and neighbouring hospitals allows for more co-ordinated, seamless transitions between care settings.

Additionally, the expanded use of MyChart now includes self-management tools and remote monitoring programs for post-hip and knee replacement patients, as well as those with gestational diabetes – helping patients stay connected to their care teams between visits and supporting better outcomes.

These are just a few examples that demonstrate how Mackenzie Health is leveraging digital innovation to enhance the patient experience, improve care delivery and ensure timely, informed decision-making at every stage of the patient journey.

Maintaining EMRAM Stage 7 status results in:

  • Long-term consistency and leadership: Mackenzie Health is not just meeting standards temporarily, it has embedded digital excellence into the fabric of how it delivers care. It’s consistently demonstrating the benefits of using an EMR system not just for documentation, but also to actively drive safer, smarter and more efficient care over time.
  • Ongoing innovation and adaptability: Health care evolves quickly. Maintaining Stage 7 means that Mackenzie Health is keeping pace with technological advances and emerging best practices, proving its ability to adapt, evolve and continue to use its systems to meet the needs of patients and teams in a changing environment.
  • A deeply rooted EMR culture: Stage 7 revalidation requires proof that an organization’s EMR tools are being used meaningfully and consistently across the board – from frontline clinicians to support teams. This revalidation confirms that the team at Mackenzie Health is highly engaged, leveraging digital tools every day to enhance quality, safety and patient experience.

This revalidation reinforces Mackenzie Health’s position as a national leader in digital health transformation and a model for how technology can meaningfully enhance patient outcomes.

As the organization continues to grow and evolve, this achievement reflects the dedication of its staff, physicians and partners who work every day to integrate innovation into compassionate care. Mackenzie Health remains committed to health care innovation – ensuring every patient benefits from the safest, most efficient and connected experience possible.
