Sunnybrook opts for Oracle/Cerner electronic record system

August 13, 2025

Andy SmithTORONTO – On July 31, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre entered an agreement with Oracle Canada to implement a new health information system (HIS) powered by the Oracle Health electronic health record (EHR).

“This is an important milestone for Sunnybrook, representing our commitment to inventing the future of health care,” said Dr. Andy Smith (pictured), president and CEO, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. “Our patients have much to look forward to with the new system, as it will mean a more integrated experience no matter where they’re seen across every campus, clinic, or care area.”

“We are thrilled to officially embark on this transformative collaboration between Oracle and Sunnybrook,” said Erin O’Halloran, vice president and market leader, Oracle Canada.

“Sunnybrook’s unwavering commitment to innovation, discovery, and delivering compassionate care when it matters most closely aligns with Oracle’s mission to empower healthcare organizations through modern, data-driven technology. We are proud to support Sunnybrook as they continue to lead in reimagining what’s possible in Canadian health care and inventing the future of care.”

“Our new HIS will accelerate us into the future,” added Rob Lee, vice president of Digital Health and chief information officer at Sunnybrook. “The new system means we will have our patient data, all in one place. This will mean a better, more integrated experience for both our patients and health care teams, through a single electronic health record.”

A move to a central system will result in a more streamlined experience for patients, who will also benefit from an improved patient portal.

The new system is expected to launch in 2027, giving our patients and care teams access to the latest technology.
