Osler Health acquires da Vinci surgical robot

November 26, 2025

Dr Roberta MinnaBRAMPTON/ETOBICOKE, Ont. – William Osler Health System’s Surgery Program has introduced the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System, a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical technology that brings cutting-edge surgical care close to home for the Osler community.

The world-renowned da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System is a leading technology used in hospitals around the world. It helps surgeons perform complex procedures with greater precision and control. This system is especially useful in some surgeries for the urinary, chest and reproductive systems, and Osler surgeons will be utilizing this technology for these surgeries as part of its initial robotic program in the months ahead.

By giving surgeons better enhanced dexterity, accuracy, and visibility, it helps improve patient outcomes and supports faster recovery.

“Introducing the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System allows Osler surgeons to provide the full spectrum of surgical oncology care within our hospitals, bringing innovative healthcare delivered with compassion to our communities,” said Dr. Roberta Minna (pictured), chief of surgery and co-medical director, surgical services at William Osler Health System.

“Greater access to robotic assisted surgery results in fewer surgical complications and better patient recovery, a significant benefit to our community,” he added. “Robotic assisted surgery supports the growth in surgical oncology and the development of Osler as a comprehensive Cancer Care Centre.”

On November 17, Osler’s Dr. Aziz Khambati, urologist and surgeon, performed a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy using the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System – prostatectomy is a surgery to take out part or all of the prostate gland.

Using miniaturized robotic instruments passed through small keyhole incisions in the patient’s abdomen, the surgeon is able to remove the prostate and nearby tissues while minimizing disruption to the body.

For the patient, this means a less invasive procedure, greater precision, and the potential for a smoother, more comfortable recovery, helping patients return to their daily lives more quickly and with greater confidence.

“Robotic assisted surgery has become the standard of care for surgical management for many patients with prostate and kidney cancer, and provides many advantages to patients and surgeons,” said Dr. Khambati. “Robotic systems excel in precision and enable surgeons to perform intricate and delicate procedures with greater accuracy.”

William Osler Health System (Osler) is a leading hospital system serving more than 1.3 million people in Brampton, North Etobicoke, Caledon and surrounding communities – one of the most culturally diverse, fastest growing areas in Ontario. Accredited with Exemplary Standing, Accreditation Canada’s highest rating for a Canadian hospital, Osler includes Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital, Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness (Peel Memorial), a Reactivation Care Unit and a Withdrawal Management Centre.

Building on a legacy of clinical excellence and innovation and home to the Osler Research Institute for Health Innovation, Osler is planning for the future with transformative developments, including the new Peel Memorial Hospital and as the primary clinical partner for Toronto Metropolitan University’s new School of Medicine in Brampton. William Osler Health System Foundation seeks to create a healthier community through giving by inspiring its communities to invest in exceptional health care close to home. www.williamoslerhs.ca.
