Horizon Health partners with AI leader in DI

December 22, 2025

Zach KilburnFREDERICTON, N.B. – Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is partnering with Qure.ai, a global leader in healthcare artificial intelligence, to implement an advanced AI-powered lung cancer detection and management solution.

The Qure.ai solution uses advanced AI to assist radiologists and clinicians in identifying suspicious lung nodules and assessing cancer risk through chest X-ray and CT scan analysis. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada, and early detection can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the need for intensive therapeutic or surgical intervention.

“This partnership represents a significant advancement in how we approach lung cancer detection and patient care,” said Zach Kilburn (pictured), chief digital officer at Horizon Health Network.

“By integrating AI technology that works seamlessly with our existing infrastructure, we’re empowering our clinicians with enhanced decision-support tools that can help identify potential concerns earlier. This is about putting innovation to work in service of better patient outcomes.”

“This project exemplifies how we’re applying our innovation framework to evaluate emerging technologies and measure their real-world impact on the care we deliver,” said Jennifer Sheils, Horizon’s vice president of strategy, transformation and chief innovation officer. “We’re building evidence-based practices that demonstrate measurable improvements in patient care, while also supporting broader efforts through our research, innovation and better health institute to advance research excellence and translate innovation into tangible health outcomes for New Brunswickers.”

The AI-powered solution will enhance Horizon’s capacity to analyze chest imaging, supporting clinicians in managing increased volumes while maintaining high-quality, patient-centered care.

The Qure.ai lung cancer suite includes three integrated components: qXR-LN for incidental detection of lung nodules on chest X-rays; qCT-Quant for assessment and quantification of lung nodules on CT scans; and qTrack for coordinated patient management to support lung nodule clinics and care navigation.

“Proactive CT-based lung cancer screening strategies are a giant step forward, but only one part of the battle against lung cancer. AI has the power to cast a wider net, to identify small lung nodules that can be indicative of early-stage lung cancer on routine CT and X-rays that may be obtained for other indications. This can include pre-operative examinations or trauma-related admissions,” said Jim Mercadante, chief commercial officer at Qure.ai. “We are delighted to be entering into this progressive lung cancer AI partnership with Horizon Health Network in Canada and supporting them with digital transformation.”
