$174M contract to redevelop Stevenson hospital
February 4, 2026
ALLISTON, Ont. – Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and The Stevenson Memorial Hospital have awarded a fixed-price contract valued at $174 million to Pomerleau Inc. to deliver the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Phase 1 Redevelopment Project in Alliston.
Infrastructure Ontario and The Stevenson Memorial Hospital selected Pomerleau Inc. following extensive evaluations through an open, fair and competitive procurement process that began in August 2024.
The redevelopment will revitalize and significantly expand the hospital’s clinical spaces equipped with advanced technology and modern facilities, including a 24-hour emergency department, medical/ surgical inpatient unit, a fully equipped laboratory, surgical suites, obstetrics and a range of specialized care areas. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026.
Infrastructure Ontario and Stevenson Memorial Hospital are working with the Ministry of Health to deliver this Project.
“We look forward to working closely with Pomerleau Inc. as we build a new hospital facility for Stevenson and a new future, transforming healthcare for New Tecumseth and surrounding communities,” said Carmine Stumpo (pictured), SMH Supervisor, in a news release.
According to SMH, the current infrastructure on Fletcher Crescent in Alliston was designed to support 7,000 emergency department visits per year when it was built in 1964. The hospital says it now manages nearly 35,000 visits per year.
The redevelopment project will allow Stevenson Memorial Hospital to increase inpatient bed capacity by 20 percent and will triple the square footage of the existing hospital.
Examples of improved patient comfort in the new addition include a reduction in crowding, improved care environment for birthing mothers, improved patient privacy and confidentiality, and improved flexibility in managing inpatients (with 100 percent private inpatient rooms), among others.
“The expansion of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital is an important component to addressing the healthcare needs of Ontarians,” said Sean Smithson, Pomerleau’s Regional vice president. “We are proud to partner with Infrastructure Ontario and the team at the Stevenson Memorial Hospital to deliver a safe, modern facility that will help the community access the critical care they need when they need it.”
The province said in a news release that the complete redevelopment is expected to be completed by late 2028.
The Town of New Tecumseth is the seventh fastest growing municipality in Canada as per the 2021 Census, experiencing 28 per cent growth in population since 2016. The ongoing and rapid growth of the region is predicted to continue, and this redevelopment project is needed to ensure that Stevenson Memorial Hospital has the infrastructure necessary to meet the increasing demand.
