Guelph General goes live with digital pathology

February 11, 2026

Dr Christopher MaGUELPH, Ont. – International medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra has successfully activated its digital pathology module at Guelph General Hospital (GGH), marking them as the first site in Canada to go live with Sectra Digital Pathology.

Leveraging their existing Sectra One Cloud enterprise imaging platform, the hospital was able to successfully expand their imaging services into digital pathology, supporting modernized workflows, integrated diagnostics with radiology, and faster, more accurate results to enhance patient care.

“The future of pathology has arrived at Guelph General Hospital, this is a transformative moment for our lab and hospital,” said Dr. Christopher Ma (pictured), director and chief of laboratory medicine at Guelph General Hospital.

“With digital pathology in place, we can review cases with more accuracy, collaborate seamlessly no matter where we are, and deliver timely diagnoses resulting in faster management decisions for our patients. Digital pathology enables us to support both our clinicians and the people we care for through more precise and efficient diagnostics.”

The addition of digital pathology is a key milestone in GGH’s Laboratory Services Improvement Project, a multi-year initiative to modernize the core lab, automate workflows, and enhance operational efficiency in support of improved patient outcomes.

Colin James, senior director of digital health and information technology at Guelph General Hospital added: “Expanding our Sectra One Cloud platform with digital pathology was a logical next step. With this capability enabled, our clinicians have a single, comprehensive view of imaging across radiology and pathology, which is essential for complex cases.”

The digital pathology module was activated on GGH’s Sectra One Cloud enterprise imaging platform, first implemented in 2023. This allowed the hospital to extend its cloud-based enterprise imaging backbone and expand its digital services with minimal impact to existing core systems. Sectra One Cloud provides a scalable, secure foundation that unifies imaging across disciplines and supports advanced workflows.

Guelph General Hospital signed the statement of work for its digital pathology expansion with Sectra in May 2025. Validation testing began in September 2025 in accordance with Canadian Association of Pathologists regulations, and the module went live for clinical use on January 8, 2026, supporting approximately 10,000 pathology exams per year.

“This expansion into digital pathology is a great accomplishment for both Guelph General Hospital and Sectra,” said Nader Soltani, president, Sectra Canada Inc. “Last year marked the 10-year anniversary of Sectra Digital Pathology and, recently we are seeing increased demand for digitizing laboratories across Canada. This implementation shows how Sectra can leverage our global experience to quickly drive modernization of lab workflows and integrate pathology and radiology workflows to improve collaboration among specialists in Canada.”
