Scarborough Health Network appoints new CMIO

TORONTO – Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nihal Haque (pictured) as chief medical information officer (CMIO). Dr. Haque is a dual-certified internist and geriatrician with deep expertise in clinical informatics, digital health, and artificial intelligence–enabled care. He currently serves as a geriatrician at SHN and holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto.

Throughout his career, Dr. Haque has focused on bridging frontline clinical practice with digital innovation. His work includes leading hospital-wide AI initiatives, co-developing governance frameworks for emerging digital tools, and advancing practical applications of AI to improve clinical workflows and reduce physician administrative burden.

At the national level, Dr. Haque serves on the Data and Informatics Governance Committee at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, contributing to physician-focused digital health governance and data strategy.

As a faculty affiliate at Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (TCAIREM) at the University of Toronto, he has also advanced clinician education in AI, including the development of curricula and frameworks for the integration of artificial intelligence into medical practice.

He developed one of Canada’s first online CME courses in AI for Canadian clinicians and continues to deliver it annually. His appointment comes at a significant moment for SHN, as the organization advances its digital health maturity, including the planned accreditation of HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7, and positions technology as a core enabler of clinical excellence and patient safety.

In the CMIO role, Dr. Haque will provide physician leadership for SHN’s digital health strategy, clinical informatics, and technology-enabled care. Working in close partnership with Digital Services, Enterprise Analytics, clinical programs, regional and enterprise leaders, he will advance safe, high quality, high-value care through the alignment of digital systems, data, and innovation with clinical priorities driving measurable improvements in patient outcomes, provider experience, and operational performance.
