Dr. Fahima Osman wins innovation award

TORONTO – Congratulations to Dr. Fahima Osman (pictured) on receiving the Health Innovation & Patient Empowerment Award from the Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario (BPAO). Dr. Fahima Osman is a breast surgical oncologist at Women’s College Hospital whose work spans the operating room, research lab and world of health innovation.

The award recognizes Dr. Osman’s leadership in advancing patient-centred cancer care through innovation. Inspired by the needs of her patients, she developed My Journey – a personalized digital platform that helps patients navigate their cancer care with clear information, coordinated appointments and the support they need to make informed decisions throughout their journey.

Dr. Osman’s work reflects Women’s College Hospital’s commitment to transforming healthcare through innovation while advancing more equitable care for all. Her leadership also aligns with the goals of WCH’s Black Health Plan, which supports improved health outcomes for Black communities through research, innovation and equitable models of care.

Dr. Osman was recognized by the BPAO through a video celebrating her journey, leadership and impact on patients, families and the future of cancer care.

Said Dr. Osman: “Technology is a powerful tool to help us deliver better and more thoughtful care. Cancer care can be overwhelming, not just medically but logistically and emotionally. Both patients and healthcare providers are often navigating a complex journey with a lot to keep track of.

“Seeing this every day is what motivated me to build tools that simplify that journey, so that patients feel more supported, more informed and more in control during one of the most difficult times in their lives.”
