WINNIPEG – A new pilot project at HSC Winnipeg is using innovative technology to remotely monitor medically appropriate patients, helping to reduce falls and other adverse events by installing an IV-pole-sized portable camera and audio unit at the patient’s bedside. The Halo telemonitoring program, in partnership with Toronto’s University Health Network (UHN), sees medically appropriate patients monitored remotely 24 hours per day, seven days per week by trained UHN telemonitoring technicians through a secure livestream.

OTTAWA – The federal government warned the provinces that they could see their future federal funding clawed back if they continue to allow private clinics to charge patients directly for virtual healthcare. In a letter sent on Thursday, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos (pictured) warned his provincial and territorial counterparts that medically necessary services are covered by the Canada Health Act, even if they are provided online or by phone.

SASKATOON – In November, St. Joseph’s Hospital in the southern Saskatchewan community of Gravelbourg, received the MELODY Telerobotic Ultrasound System as part of a research initiative. Since then, more than 300 ultrasound scans have been performed using the system as part of the project, with about 80 percent of these scans obstetrical ultrasounds.
