SE Health acquires Fonemed
September 8, 2021
MARKHAM, Ont. – SE Health, a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to people living and aging at home, announced its acquisition of Fonemed. Building on its earlier investment in the virtual nurse advice line, the acquisition further bolsters SE Health’s national presence and digital edge, as well as ongoing opportunities for global expansion.
Founded in 1996, Fonemed is a successful growth-oriented telehealth company offering 24/7 remote nursing advice, medical triage, chronic disease management and biometric monitoring throughout Canada, the United States and beyond.
Headquartered in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Fonemed serves more than 25 million people in North America alone through contracts with government health agencies, physician practices, benefits and EAP providers, hospitals, universities and health clinics. According to SE Health CEO Shirlee Sharkey, new opportunities in the digital health space abound, as the pandemic has accelerated both the adoption and demand for virtual care. “We continue to look for new ways to deliver the modern healthcare services Canadians need, expect and deserve,” said Sharkey. “Going forward, we will leverage the unique strengths and competencies of both organizations to develop a fulsome health solutions portfolio, building on our shared passion for outstanding client experiences, quality and culture of care.”
Fonemed’s management team will remain in Newfoundland and Labrador. It will continue to be led by president and CEO Charlene Brophy (pictured), a dynamic business leader and nurse innovator who has been recognized as one of the Top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada for the past five years.
