Toronto General rated 3rd best hospital worldwide

March 6, 2024

UHN Newsweek top hospitalTORONTO – UHN’s Toronto General Hospital (TGH) has climbed to third among the world’s best hospitals in a global ranking from Newsweek magazine, its highest spot on the prestigious annual list. TGH’s ranking behind only Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, both of the United States, makes it the top publicly-funded hospital in the world.

Part of UHN, Canada’s No. 1 hospital, TGH is home to the world-leading Sprott Department of Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ajmera Transplant Centre, however it is only with the dedication of every program and service, including General Internal Medicine, the Emergency Department, the Laboratory Medicine Program, Joint Department of Medical Imaging and support staff in all areas, that a truly world class academic hospital is sustained.

In the past year, UHN has become a founding member of Mayo Clinic’s Platform_Connect, appointed Canada’s first hospital Chief Artificial Intelligence Scientist and again been ranked the country’s top research hospital. Newsweek also cited a study published last year at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute indicating how artificial intelligence and machine learning can guide physicians on donor lung suitability and transplant outcomes, dramatically increasing the number of successful organ transplants.

TGH is the only hospital in Canada to crack the top 10 in the rankings by Newsweek, as it has for six consecutive years.

UHN’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has also been recognized as Canada’s top specialized hospital.

“At UHN, we are honoured and appreciative to once again be recognized as an international leader in patient care, research and education,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN’s president & CEO. “It is particularly gratifying to see our universally accessible care model solidify its place among the world’s best hospitals.

“This recognition is only made possible because of the collective efforts of TeamUHN – the dedicated staff, physicians, researchers, learners, philanthropists, Board members and volunteers who everyday are committed to our mission of building A Healthier World.”

The Newsweek rankings, which were made public on Feb. 28, 2024, are developed and finalized by a global panel of doctors, medical professionals and administrators.

“As Canada’s top research hospital, we are enormously proud of the groundbreaking work done by our scientists and their teams – work that discovers, designs, tests and implements new healthcare solutions to elevate patient experiences and address unmet patient needs,” says Dr. Brad Wouters, UHN’s executive vice president of Science and Research.

“We are grateful for the tremendous support of our donors and funders, including the Province of Ontario and Government of Canada, and the University of Toronto in helping us to create tomorrow’s care,” said Dr. Wouters.
