Alberta Innovates appoints an interim CEO

July 17, 2024


EDMONTON – The Alberta Innovates Board Chair, Tony Williams, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Mahon (pictured) as the interim chief executive officer, effective July 1, 2024. Dr. Mahon previously served as the president of the University of Lethbridge, where he spearheaded the University’s largest capital campaign, resulting in the construction of the Science Commons, a major science and innovation facility.

“Dr. Mahon brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of leadership within Alberta’s research and innovation ecosystem. With his vision, deep expertise, and passion for people and partnerships, we are confident that Alberta Innovates will continue to grow and thrive during this transition period,” said Williams. Dr. Mahon has been appointed to a one-year term as interim CEO.

With over 35 years of experience in Alberta and Manitoba’s post-secondary sectors, Dr. Mahon has contributed leadership to many elements of the research and innovation ecosystem.

Prior to his presidency at the University of Lethbridge Dr. Mahon served as a Dean at the University of Alberta for 10 years during which time he also served in a dual role of Chair of the Health Sciences Council.

Prior to that Dr. Mahon led a health and sport performance research institute at the University of Manitoba and also served as an associate dean for research and graduate Studies. Dr. Mahon has contributed leadership provincially and nationally including as Chair of Universities Canada.

His own research is focused in disability studies and health and has been funded by federal and provincial granting agencies along with foundations and federal and provincial governments.

In his interim role as CEO, Dr. Mahon’s primary focus will be on serving the dedicated people within Alberta Innovates and the organization’s many partners. With a collaborative approach, Dr. Mahon aims to help the organization evolve and grow, while also supporting the Board of Directors in preparing for a permanent CEO.

“I am honored to join Alberta Innovates as the Interim CEO. This organization plays a crucial role in advancing research and innovation in Alberta, and I am committed to supporting our talented team and valued partners during this transition period. Together, we will continue to drive forward our mission, fostering growth, innovation and productivity to support our province’s competitiveness on the global stage,” Dr. Mahon said.
