Altaf Stationwala named president/CEO of Unity Health

April 2, 2025

Altaf StationwalaTORONTO – Unity Health Toronto is pleased to announce the appointment of Altaf Stationwala (pictured) as the new president and CEO, effective July 1. A highly respected leader in Ontario’s healthcare system, Altaf brings a wealth of expertise in health system operations, integration, and digital transformation.

Under his leadership, Unity Health will continue to expand its role as a globally recognized teaching and research-intensive hub. His leadership puts patients and staff at the fore and he comes to Unity with a deep commitment to serving the disadvantaged and upholding the mission and Catholic identity of Unity Health.

“Altaf is an innovative and collaborative leader who shares our mission and values. He will bring the business leadership, technology and capital deployment skills so urgently needed today in healthcare to complement and support the growth in research, education and health science excellence already present at Unity Health,” said Nora Aufreiter, Unity Health’s board chair.

For the past 14 years, Altaf has served as president and CEO of Mackenzie Health, steering its evolution into a leading regional health system. His tenure is marked by bold expansion, including the successful opening of Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Ontario’s first net-new hospital in decades, and an award-winning Epic EMR system.

He has held senior leadership roles at Mount Sinai Hospital, William Osler Health System and has chaired the Ontario Hospital Association.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to join Unity Health Toronto and build upon the incredible work that has been done to advance healthcare excellence,” said Altaf. “I look forward to learning from the talented teams across Unity Health’s three hospitals and satellite locations and leveraging my experience to support continued innovation and leadership in the academic health sciences field. Most importantly, I am deeply aligned with Unity Health’s commitment to Catholic healthcare, and I am committed to upholding the organization’s legacy of compassionate care that prioritizes the well-being of our patients, staff, and community.”

In preparation for this next phase of leadership, Unity Health Toronto recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Dr. Tim Rutledge, who has decided to retire after more than seven years as the inaugural president and CEO.

Tim has been instrumental in shaping Unity Health, guiding the organization through a transformative period, including the formation of its integrated network, the naming and branding of the organization, and the development and implementation of its first strategic plan.

Tim’s leadership was especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he steered Unity Health through one of the most challenging times in healthcare. His dedication to equity and diversity has strengthened the organization and fostered an inclusive environment for patients, staff, and the community.

Under his leadership, Unity Health adopted policies and initiatives that have addressed disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, setting a standard for compassionate and inclusive care.

Tim’s vision and strategic direction have positioned Unity Health for continued success. The board of directors extended its deepest gratitude for his extraordinary contributions.
