TORONTO – The board of directors of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre announced that president and CEO Dr. Andy Smith (pictured) will step down on June 30, 2027, concluding an extraordinary leadership career dedicated to advancing patient care, research, education and innovation at Sunnybrook.
Dr. Smith leaves a significant mark on Sunnybrook’s history. Throughout his tenure at Sunnybrook, he played a pivotal role in shaping the organization, helping to strengthen its position as one of Canada’s leading academic health sciences centres, while advancing excellence in patient care, research and education.
“Andy has devoted much of his distinguished career in service to Sunnybrook – the last 10 as CEO – and has had a profound impact on our organization, our people and the patients, families and communities we serve,” said Colin Lynch, board chair. “He has been a tireless champion for Sunnybrook, building strong relationships across the healthcare sector, government, philanthropy and our broader community.
“On behalf of the board, we are deeply grateful for his leadership and commitment. While there is still important work ahead before his retirement next year, we wanted to share this news with our community and begin celebrating the remarkable legacy he has built.”
The board of directors has initiated a comprehensive search process to identify Sunnybrook’s next president and CEO. The process will be led by the Board and supported by executive search expertise, with a focus on identifying the leader best positioned to guide Sunnybrook into its next chapter.
“The board takes succession planning seriously and has been engaged in ongoing discussions regarding leadership continuity,” said Lynch. “Sunnybrook is well-positioned for the future, and we are committed to conducting a rigorous search process to identify the next leader who will build on our strong foundation.”
“I got my first Sunnybrook badge as a medical student in 1986, and it has been an incredible privilege to work alongside such talented and dedicated staff, physicians, researchers, learners and volunteers,” said Dr. Smith. “I remain fully and forever committed to Sunnybrook and look forward to continuing our important work over the coming months, while supporting a smooth and successful transition.”
Dr. Smith’s impact on Sunnybrook extends far beyond his title. Throughout his career, he inspired colleagues with his optimism, energy and genuine connections to people in all parts of the hospital. A passionate mentor and champion of innovation, he helped drive breakthroughs in care, research and commercialization, while fostering a culture that embraces excellence, curiosity and continuous improvement.
His leadership supported the growth of programs and services, national and international recognition for quality, transformational philanthropic investment and the expansion of Sunnybrook’s campus and facilities, leaving a lasting legacy that will benefit patients, families, staff and learners for years to come.
Over the coming months, Sunnybrook will provide opportunities for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients, donors and partners to celebrate Dr. Smith’s contributions and recognize his legacy.
