New tool to predict ICU admission and discharge

TORONTO – Hospital Intensive Care Units (ICUs) cater to patients with severe illnesses requiring constant monitoring and specialized treatment, including ventilation. Pandemics like COVID-19 significantly increase the risk of ICU overcrowding given the surge in patients, which can negatively impact the quality of care. As a result, an early understanding of a patient’s unique treatment journey, including their ICU requirements, is critical to improved treatment and better management of ICUs.

TORONTO – A team of healthcare professionals, led by Dr. Bo Wang (pictured), artificial intelligence (AI) lead at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, have designed an innovative tool which enables researchers to track changes in the genetic structure of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic.
LONDON, ON – Researchers at Lawson Health Research Institute are investigating whether an artificial neural network could be used to diagnose COVID-19. The AI system is being trained to learn and recognize patterns in ultrasound lung scans of patients with confirmed COVID-19 at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) by comparing them to ultrasound scans of patients with other types of lung infections.
MONTREAL – Faced with the urgency posed by COVID-19, Scale AI recently launched a call for projects that can help Canada meet this challenge by leveraging technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The challenge resulted in more than 120 projects being submitted in just three weeks.
