MRI innovation makes cancerous tissue light up

Alex WongWATERLOO, Ont. – A new form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that makes cancerous tissue glow in medical images could help doctors more accurately detect and track the progression of cancer over time. Improving access to care in sub-Saharan Africa

Dr Bernd MontagGERMANY & AFRICA – Siemens Healthineers and the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF have announced a partnership to help strengthen fragile health systems in sub-Saharan Africa by improving access to diagnostics and linkage to treatment. New IR suite opens at Pasqua Hospital

Dawn LeippiREGINA, Sask. – The Pasqua Hospital in Regina now has a new Interventional Radiology (IR) suite that opened on Monday, Feb. 14. The Hospitals of Regina Foundation (HRF) funded $2.2 million to the IR suite to increase capacity for the essential service. Peterborough adds second MRI scanner

Dr Peter McLaughlin 2022PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) has announced that a second MRI machine has now arrived at the hospital. “Today marks a very important milestone for PRHC and for the people we serve across our community and region. Adding a second MRI machine will allow us to perform up to 5,000 additional MRI procedures each year at PRHC – this is incredible news,” said Dr. Lynn Mikula, executive vice president and chief of staff, PRHC. Telehealth used for ultrasound training in Yemen

Dr William CherniakMARKHAM, Ont. – An emergency room doctor at Markham Stouffville Hospital is leading a team of physicians that is training other clinicians in worn-torn Yemen in the use of handheld ultrasound. Due to the pandemic, they’ve been using telehealth to train and support the clinicians in Yemen. “Initially, we were supposed to actually fly in and bring the devices with us for an initial one-week training period, but then, the pandemic kicked in just as we got approval for the grant,” Dr. William Cherniak (pictured) told CBC News. Mini-MRIs arrive in Canada, assist at point of care

MOOSE FACTORY, ONT. – The Weeneebayko General Hospital, serving patients at James Bay and Hudson’s Bay, has become the first hospital in Canada to implement a portable MRI scanner for a project assessing the technology in a clinical setting. The hospital went live with the Hyperfine Swoop, a scanner that can be wheeled to the bedside and plugged into a standard electrical outlet. It is operated remotely through an accompanying iPad.
