Canada’s primary care quality lags other nations

David BlumenthalOTTAWA – A survey of primary care in 10 industrialized countries shows Canada at the low end of the pack when it comes to many measurements of quality. In particular, the Commonwealth Fund’s survey found only 53% of Canadian doctors reporting that patients who request a same-day or next-day appointment can get one. That puts Canada in ninth place in this category – with Switzerland at the top (85%) and Sweden at the bottom (42%). Read More

Alberta to launch province-wide plan for DI peer review

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is putting the finishing touches on a province-wide peer review program and Marlene Stodgell-O’Grady, Director of Quality, Safety and Education, Diagnostic Imaging Services, expects to see positive results. “We’ve really focused our program on education, learning and improving outcomes as opposed to looking for outliers,” she says, noting that AHS performs about 2.85 million exams per year.
